NAACP files civil rights lawsuits against Mississippi over policing and judicial appointments.

The NAACP is suing Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves and other officials over two bills that would expand state control over Jackson's policing and judicial system, which the organization says are unconstitutional and represent a state takeover of Jackson. The bills, passed by a majority-white and Republican-controlled state House and Senate, would create an unelected court system and restrict residents' ability to protest near state property. Governor Reeves said the legislation was passed in response to Jackson's "unprecedented crime epidemic."
