Supreme Court's Voting Rights Act Ruling Impacts Alabama's Congressional Map for 2024 Election.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that Alabama's congressional district map violates the Voting Rights Act, as Black voters do not have an equal chance to elect representatives of their choosing. The state's population is about 27% Black, but only one of seven Congressional districts is majority Black, or 14%. The court has remanded the case back to the same three-judge panel to draw new lines or review the lines if they're drawn by the state Legislature. Alabama's only Black representative in Congress, Terri Sewell, expects prompt action to redraw the map, and a new map could be in place before the 2024 election.
