Black Californians are hoping that the state's reparations task force recommendations will not become another broken promise. The task force has signed off on a list of recommendations, including payments to descendants of enslaved people and a formal apology from the state. However, opponents argue that slavery was a thing of the past, and the state faces a projected $31.5 billion budget shortfall, reducing the possibility of legislative support for some of the task force's more ambitious recommendations. Black Americans have been deprived of a lot of money due to discriminatory policies, and meaningful reparations would include an official state apology, public funding for nonprofit organizations that assist Black residents, and cash reparations for every eligible person for the pay denied to their ancestors.
