US House Censures Rashida Tlaib for Israel-Hamas Comments

The US House of Representatives has voted 234-188 to censure Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress, over her comments on the Israel-Hamas war. The resolution claimed Tlaib had been "promoting false narratives" and "calling for the destruction of the state of Israel." This punishment is one step below expulsion. Tlaib defended her position, stating that criticising the Israeli government is not anti-Semitic and that her criticism has always been directed towards the government and its leadership. Some Democrats warned of the risks to free speech from the censure, while others supported it. Tlaib will become the second Muslim-American woman in Congress to be formally admonished this year over criticism of Israel.
