"Air Quality Disparities Unveiled in Salt Lake City's West Side: Environmental Justice Report"

A preliminary report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveals that several neighborhoods on Salt Lake City's west side, including Westpointe, Jordan Meadows, Poplar Grove, Glendale, Fairpark, and Rose Park, experience disproportionate pollution and health risks due to their proximity to major transportation routes and industrial activities. These neighborhoods have higher asthma burdens, cancer risks, and lower life expectancies compared to the east side of the city. The report comes amid concerns about increased pollution from the Utah Inland Port, and while the EPA can provide grants, the primary authority to enforce clean air standards lies with the state. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall urged residents to petition lawmakers for action.
