The research suggests that as more springs are exposed due to glacier retreat, methane emissions will likely increase, contributing to global warming. These springs, previously unrecognized as a significant source of methane, could release over 2,000 tons of methane per year across Svalbard, equivalent to 10% of Norway's annual oil and gas industry emissions.
