Solar panels have a lifespan of up to 25 years, and experts warn that billions of panels will eventually need to be disposed of and replaced, leading to a looming global environmental disaster. The world's first factory dedicated to fully recycling solar panels is set to open in France, which can recover nearly all of the precious materials contained within the panels, such as silver and copper. Energy experts are calling for urgent government action to prevent the waste mountain by 2050. The volume of scrap solar panels could be huge, with more than 200 million tonnes globally by 2050.
