"Fungus Discovered to Degrade Ocean Plastic"

Researchers from NIOZ and other institutions have discovered that the marine fungus Parengyodontium album can break down polyethylene plastic in the ocean, but only after it has been exposed to UV radiation. This finding adds to the limited list of known plastic-degrading marine fungi and highlights the potential for other unknown fungi to contribute to plastic degradation in deeper ocean layers.
