"Unique 'Salty Licorice' Cat Pattern Traced to Genetic Mutation in Finland"

Scientists from the University of Helsinki and Wisdom Panel have identified a genetic mutation responsible for a unique coat color pattern in Finnish domestic cats, known as "salmiak." This pattern, characterized by fur that is colored near the base and becomes progressively whiter, is linked to a 95,000 basepair deletion downstream of the KIT gene. The discovery enhances understanding of feline coat color genetics and could aid in breeding efforts to preserve this rare trait.
