Northern Lights to Illuminate Multiple U.S. States, Including Idaho and Michigan, This Week

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, could be visible in parts of Idaho on Thursday, July 13, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. The best chance of viewing the lights is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, away from city lights. Other states that may see the northern lights include Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Washington, Vermont, Maryland, Oregon, Wyoming, and Indiana. The lights are caused by solar winds and Earth's magnetic field, creating glowing, colorful displays in the sky.
