Oil Industry at Crossroads: Climate Crisis Deepens or Solutions Emerge

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that the oil and gas industry faces a "moment of truth" at the upcoming COP28 climate summit, urging them to choose between exacerbating the climate crisis or becoming part of the solution. The industry currently invests only 1% in clean energy and continues to emit significant amounts of planet-heating gases. To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the IEA recommends reducing pollution from oil and gas operations by over 60% by 2030 and increasing investments in renewable energy to 50% by the same year. Carbon capture technologies alone are not sufficient, and a radical change in spending priorities is needed.
