China and the U.S. have pledged to accelerate their efforts to address climate change ahead of a major U.N. meeting on the issue. They committed to reducing emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases, in addition to carbon dioxide. The cooperation between the two largest emitters of greenhouse gases is crucial for the success of the upcoming U.N. climate talks. Both countries also reiterated their commitment to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030. The joint statement did not include a pledge to phase out fossil fuels, which disappointed some experts.
