Ukraine is currently engaged in a counteroffensive against Russian forces in occupied areas, resulting in high numbers of military casualties on both sides. The most intense fighting has been centered on the southeastern Zaporizhzhia province and eastern Donetsk province. While Ukraine has made small advances, Russian forces are conducting relatively effective defensive operations in Ukraine's south. The counteroffensive is expected to last a long time, and a recent "peace mission" by African leaders to both Ukraine and Russia ended with no immediate signs of progress.
