Global Spread of Pneumonia Outbreaks Impacting Children

Outbreaks of pneumonia affecting children have been reported in multiple countries, including the Netherlands, Denmark, the US, and China. These outbreaks are higher than usual for this time of year, but there is no new virus or pathogen causing them. Known respiratory germs like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria are responsible for the majority of cases. Some individuals may develop more severe symptoms due to lack of previous exposure to similar infections. Co-infections with multiple respiratory viruses can lead to more severe disease and potentially evade the immune system.
