Hearing Aids: Reducing Falls and Saving Lives

A new study suggests that consistently wearing hearing aids can lower the risk of falling, which is a leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults. Older individuals with mild hearing loss are more than twice as likely to fall, but restoring hearing through the use of hearing aids may be protective, especially when worn consistently. The study found that hearing aid users had a 50% reduced odds of experiencing a fall compared to non-users, with even greater reductions among those who wore hearing aids for at least four hours per day. The connection between hearing loss and falls may be due to the reliance on hearing for spatial awareness and the cognitive resources required to compensate for hearing loss.
