Unraveling the Gut Connection to Long COVID

A new study suggests that bits of the COVID-19 virus that survive in the gut can cause chronic inflammation, leading to reduced production of serotonin, a molecule critical for gut-brain communication. This disruption in communication may explain long-term neurological symptoms experienced by some long COVID patients, such as brain fog and impaired memory. The study also found that long COVID patients had lower levels of serotonin and changes in amino acid levels compared to healthy individuals. Blocking interferon, a protein released by the immune system in response to viral remnants, helped maintain serotonin levels in mice. Antidepressant drugs that boost serotonin levels, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), showed promise in improving memory loss in mice with viral infections. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of SSRIs in treating long COVID. Patients are advised against self-medicating and should consult with their physicians.
