Iranian Authorities Arrest Mahsa Amini's Father on Anniversary, Sparking Global Protests
TL;DR
On the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death, her father, Amjad Amini, was arrested in Iran. Mahsa's death in police custody last year sparked nationwide protests against the Iranian regime. The protests have been met with repression and internet blackouts, with at least 500 people killed or executed, including 69 children. The Iranian diaspora has also protested worldwide. President Joe Biden expressed solidarity with the Iranian people's movement and announced new sanctions against entities involved in repression in Iran. However, some activists claim that the US government is not doing enough, particularly in light of a prisoner exchange deal with Iran.
