The Power Vacuum in Gaza: Who Will Fill the Void Left by Hamas?

As Israel continues its military operation in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserts that Hamas will never rule the territory again. However, the challenge for Israel lies in finding a suitable replacement to govern Gaza, as no clear candidate has emerged. Israel does not want to remain in Gaza long-term and is unwilling to take responsibility for rebuilding the region. The Palestinian Authority, which previously governed Gaza, is seen as weak and ineffective. The idea of a "revitalized" Palestinian Authority returning to Gaza seems unrealistic at the moment. Neighboring Egypt and wealthy Arab states show no interest in getting involved, and the United Nations is not equipped to govern. Additionally, Hamas would not accept rule by outsiders. Israel faces the dilemma of finding a solution while avoiding the mistakes made in Lebanon, where their intervention led to the emergence of a more potent force, Hezbollah.
