France to Withdraw Troops and Ambassador from Niger Following Coup

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will end its military presence in Niger and recall its ambassador from the country following the coup that deposed Niger's democratically elected president. France had stationed troops in Niger to combat jihadist groups, but tensions between the two countries have escalated in recent weeks. Macron stated that France will gradually withdraw its troops and put an end to military cooperation with Niger. The junta leaders, who accused the ousted government of failing to protect the country from insurgency, had previously ordered the French ambassador to leave and revoked his diplomatic immunity.
