Italy's Meloni Affirms Plan to Sever Ties with China's Belt and Road Initiative

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that Italy's relationship with China extends beyond the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and a decision on whether to leave the BRI is still pending. Italy, the only G7 nation to join the BRI, is considering revitalizing a strategic partnership agreement with China instead. By recasting its relationship with Beijing, Italy aims to appease Western allies concerned about Chinese influence while minimizing potential backlash from China. Meloni emphasized the importance of a mutually beneficial partnership with China and mentioned the invitation to visit Beijing and attend a BRI Forum in October.
