Tipping Trends: West Virginia Ranks High, Americans Divided on Tipping Etiquette

West Virginians are considered generous tippers, ranking in the top five states with an average tip of 20.6%, according to a study by Toast. The state tips more at full-service restaurants (20.9%) compared to quick-service restaurants (17.6%). Delaware is the most generous state for tipping, with an average of 22%, while Texas, Hawaii, New York, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nevada, Florida, Washington, and California tip the least. Tipping percentages have remained steady over the past five years, with a slight decrease in quick-service restaurants. West Virginia also ranks high in alcohol purchases during weekday lunches.
