President Joe Biden has directed his administration to impose major sanctions on Russia in response to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The sanctions package, to be announced on Friday, aims to hold Russia accountable for Navalny's death and comes ahead of the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Biden explicitly blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for Navalny's death and called for Congress to pass an emergency spending bill to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The U.S. official also stated that Biden will join a virtual meeting of G7 leaders on Saturday, the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
