A recent study funded by NASA suggests that deep space travel could lead to long-lasting erectile dysfunction in male astronauts. The research conducted on rats found that exposure to galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) during long-term space travel could damage erectile tissues, causing potential decades-long genital issues. Even low levels of radiation caused oxidative stress and damage to the artery allowing blood flow to the penis and erectile tissue, with effects persisting over a year later. Weightlessness also contributed to the rats' health problems. However, targeted treatments showed promise in improving the rats' penile function, suggesting that erectile dysfunction may be treatable. Further research is needed to understand the potential impact on human astronauts.
