The Role of Volcanoes in the Extinction of Dinosaurs

A new analysis suggests that volcanic activity, specifically from the Deccan Traps in what is now West India, may have played a significant role in the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. The study found evidence of high levels of sulfur in the atmosphere, which, combined with other studies on mercury levels, indicates that volcanic activity could have caused significant climate disruptions. The research suggests that repeated volcanic winters, with drops in temperature of up to 10°C, occurred in the 100,000 years leading up to the Chicxulub meteor impact. This instability in climate conditions may have made life difficult for all plants and animals, setting the stage for the dinosaur extinction event.
