NASA's Psyche spacecraft has successfully transmitted a near-infrared laser beam encoded with test data from a distance of nearly 10 million miles, marking a significant milestone in laser communication. The laser was fired from the spacecraft and sent back to Caltech's Palomar Observatory in California. This achievement paves the way for increased data transmission throughout the solar system, surpassing the capabilities of radio frequencies. The Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment aims to demonstrate data transmission rates 10 to 100 times greater than current systems, supporting future exploration missions and higher-resolution science instruments.
