Social Media Giants Under Fire for Allowing Hamas-Linked Accounts and Spreading Misinformation During Israel-Hamas Conflict

X, formerly known as Twitter, has removed "hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts" and taken down thousands of posts since the attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group. The platform responded to the European Union's demand to address illegal content and disinformation regarding the conflict, stating that it has redistributed resources and refocused internal teams to tackle the situation. X has also removed or labeled tens of thousands of pieces of content that violate its rules on violent speech, manipulated media, and graphic media. However, concerns remain about the delay in fact-checking false posts, as it takes an average of five hours for community notes to appear after a post is created. The European Union will analyze X's response and decide on next steps under the recently enacted Digital Services Act.
