Canada retaliates with $20B in tariffs as talks collapse

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods, dollar-for-dollar matching President Trump’s 50% import taxes and targeting more than 700 items (from steel and aluminum to dairy, seafood, appliances, wood and paper) with duties ranging from 15% to 50%; the measures take effect Sept. 8 and are paired with a $7.5 billion package to aid affected businesses and workers. The move follows the breakdown of trade talks, marking a renewed escalation in the U.S.–Canada trade dispute as Ottawa says it would prefer a deal but won’t wait by the phone.
