India's Export Bans: Impact on Rice Planting and Sugar Exports

The ban on non-basmati white rice exports in India could lead to a 5% decrease in rice planting as it cuts farm income and encourages farmers to switch to other crops, according to the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), a farmers' group closely associated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The ban, announced during the current planting season, has sent a negative signal to farmers. The BKS is urging the government to compensate farmers by purchasing large quantities of the new-season rice harvest at higher prices and to announce a bonus over this year's rice Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) to help farmers sell their crop at higher prices.
