COP28 Summit Yields Optimistic Outlook for Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels

Nearly 200 countries at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai have approved a global pact that explicitly calls for transitioning away from fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. The agreement, reached after two weeks of debate, urges countries to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels in a just and equitable manner, and to stop adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by midcentury. It also calls for tripling renewable energy installations by 2030 and reducing methane emissions. While not legally binding, the deal is seen as a significant step towards phasing out fossil fuels and sending a message to investors and policymakers. Each nation is expected to submit a detailed plan for curbing greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
