A study has revealed that over 61,000 people died as a result of heatwaves during Europe's record-breaking summer in 2022, prompting calls for increased measures to protect against future deadly heatwaves. The study analyzed temperature and mortality data from 2015 to 2022 across 35 European countries, estimating that 61,672 deaths were linked to the heat between May 30 and September 4, 2022. The majority of deaths occurred among people over the age of 80, with women being more vulnerable. Without effective measures, the study predicts that Europe could face over 120,000 heat-related deaths by 2050. Urgent action is needed to protect vulnerable populations from the impacts of heatwaves.
