Climate Change Creates New Front Line in South Sudan After Historic Flooding

More than 1 million people in South Sudan are facing severe food insecurity due to the worst floods since the 1960s, with villages quickly becoming underwater and people and their livestock getting displaced. The floods have caught everyone by surprise, and hundreds of thousands of people displaced by both conflict and climate in the town of Bentiu depend on humanitarian workers for necessary supplies and food. One in five children in South Sudan are severely malnourished, with mothers forced to feed them water lilies, which grow in the flood waters, to keep their bellies full. The aid is crucial, but funding and attention have moved away from South Sudan due to conflict elsewhere in the world.
