Former Wagner Fighters Return to Ukraine's Battlefield, Operating Independently for Russian Defense Ministry

Several hundred fighters from the Wagner mercenary group have returned to Ukraine to fight in Russia's ongoing invasion, according to military officials in Kyiv. However, they have not had a significant impact on the battlefield and are scattered in different locations, lacking organization. This marks the first comeback of Wagner in Ukraine since the death of its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in August. Ukrainian officials condemned the group and denied its existence, stating that they are now only former militants who have dispersed in various directions. Reports of their return were seen as an attempt to divert attention from Ukraine's recapture of two villages near Bakhmut. Wagner mercenaries played a crucial role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including the capture of Bakhmut, but after complaints of ammunition shortages, Prigozhin announced their departure.
