Museveni confirms 54 Ugandan soldiers killed by Al-Shabab in Somalia.

President Museveni of Uganda announced that 54 Ugandan soldiers were killed in an attack by al-Shabab on a base housing African Union peacekeepers in Somalia. The attack occurred last week and al-Shabab claimed responsibility for killing 137 soldiers. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces have since recaptured the base from the al-Qaeda-linked group. Al-Shabab has been fighting since 2006 to replace Somalia’s Western-backed government with its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law.
