Rebel Attacks in DR Congo Leave Dozens Dead

Dozens of civilians were killed in attacks on villages in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Friday. The Cooperative for Development of the Congo (CODECO) is suspected to be behind the attacks. The conflict in Ituri has caused an estimated 1.5 million people to be displaced over the past six years. The violence stems from ongoing tensions between the Lendu and Hema ethnic groups, as well as from the desire to control Ituri’s natural resources. The UN has expressed deep concern over the escalation of brutal attacks on civilians in the region.
