UN urges Singapore to halt execution of Indian-origin man over cannabis charge

Tangaraju Suppiah, an Indian-origin man convicted of abetting drug trafficking in Singapore, is set to be executed on Wednesday for attempting to traffic more than 1 kg of cannabis to Singapore. Despite calls from anti-death penalty campaigners, including Richard Branson, Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs has rejected the appeals and defended its criminal justice system. The ministry stated that Tangaraju's conviction was thoroughly examined by Singapore's courts and that the death penalty is an essential component of Singapore's criminal justice system.
