Russian Cyber Attacks: Deepfakes and Website Hijacks

Hackers compromised radio and TV broadcasts in several regions of Russia and transmitted a fabricated message from President Vladimir Putin, declaring the imposition of martial law in response to a purported large-scale incursion by Ukraine. The fraudulent messages were displayed on television screens and promised a general mobilization in Ukraine’s border regions, further intensifying the already tense situation. Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s press secretary, confirmed that at least one radio station had been hacked and emphasized that the address was entirely fabricated. The methods employed by the hackers to carry out the attack pose a more intriguing question that currently lacks a definitive answer.
