Taiwan's Defense Milestone: Unveiling First Homegrown Submarine with International Support

Taiwan is set to unveil its first domestically built conventionally powered submarine, with a second one planned for 2027. The program, initiated by President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, aims to strengthen Taiwan's combat capacity. The first submarine will undergo sea trials in October and is expected to be delivered to the Taiwanese navy by the end of 2024. Despite facing political challenges and limited diplomatic relations, Taiwan received assistance from the US and several other countries in obtaining the necessary technology for the submarines. The $1.54 billion submarine will be armed with Lockheed Martin's combat system and MK-48 torpedoes. The program is part of Taiwan's efforts to enhance its defense capabilities amid tensions with China.
