US Deploys Ohio-Class Submarine to Mediterranean, Sending Message of Deterrence to Adversaries

An Ohio-class submarine, potentially equipped with ballistic or Tomahawk missiles, has arrived in the Mediterranean Sea as part of the US's efforts to strengthen its defensive posture amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. The submarine's location, typically kept secret for security reasons, was confirmed by CENTCOM. The vessel was seen sailing through the Suez Canal in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The exact weapon configuration aboard the submarine remains unverified, but the US Navy's fleet of two dozen nuclear-powered submarines carries about half of all US strategic thermonuclear warheads. The deployment coincided with high-level diplomatic visits to the region by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Last month, the Pentagon dispatched two carrier strike groups to the eastern Mediterranean to deter hostile forces, including Iran, which supports Hamas and Hezbollah.
