Drone Mapping Off Saint-Tropez Reveals France’s Deepest 16th-Century Shipwreck
During routine deep-seabed mapping off Saint-Tropez, a French Navy drone detected a large object at 2,567 meters depth. A camera and remotely operated vehicle later confirmed a ~30-meter-long 16th‑century merchant ship, dubbed Camarat 4, as the deepest wreck found in French waters and largely intact. Researchers plan a two-year effort to create a 3D reconstruction and sample only a few items, illustrating how routine seabed surveys can uncover submerged history.
