Brazil's Population Growth Hits Historic Low in Latest Census

Brazil's annual population growth has reached its slowest rate since records began in 1872, with the country's population increasing by 6.5% over the past decade. The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IGBE) reported that the lower growth rate is due to declining birth rates, with the annual growth rate in 2022 less than half of what it was in 2010. The most populated region remains the southeast, while the least populated is the center-west. The census, originally scheduled for 2020, was postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of government funding.
