Italy's population continues to decline as birth rates hit all-time low.

Italy's population continued to shrink as births dropped to a new historic low below 400,000 in 2022, with more than 12 deaths for every seven births. The resident population fell by 179,000 to 58.85 million, with a cumulative loss of more than 1.36 million people since 2014. The fertility rate edged down to 1.24 children per woman, and one in four people in Italy is above the age of 65. Immigration partly offset the trend, with foreigners making up 8.6% of the country's population in 2022.
