More than 145 countries are participating in talks to create a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution, with Norway co-leading the High Ambition Coalition in the negotiations. While environmental groups are calling for a 75% reduction in plastic production, Norway's climate and environment minister has suggested reducing the manufacture of virgin plastic. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a paper ahead of the negotiations, which found plastic pollution could be reduced by 80%, largely focusing on a circular economy. However, critics argue that the talks are too focused on recycling instead of reducing plastic production.
