India is one of the countries most exposed and vulnerable to heat, with heatwaves predicted to become more frequent, arrive earlier, and stay longer. Heatwaves have killed more than 22,000 people between 1992 and 2015, and experts believe the actual toll is much higher. However, India's heat action plans are not working well, with most plans not built for local context and having an oversimplified view of the hazards. The plans are also poor at identifying and targeting vulnerable groups, and are underfunded, with weak legal foundations and scant accountability. Simple solutions like planting trees and using design choices to reduce heat gain in buildings can help protect lives.
