Spain's Drought Crisis Sparks Battle Over Water Resources in Europe

The punishing drought spreading across Europe is threatening agriculture in southern Spain, where farmers have relied on a network of ditches dug in the Middle Ages to grow crops in one of the continent's most arid regions. Water levels at many of Spain's giant dams have sunk to unprecedented lows, and canals built in the 1970s that turned the surrounding region into an agricultural powerhouse are starting to run dry.
