The United Nations has successfully completed the transfer of over a million barrels of oil from an aging tanker, known as SOF Safer, moored off the coast of war-torn Yemen, preventing a potential environmental catastrophe. The dilapidated tanker, which carried four times the amount of oil spilled in the Exxon Valdez disaster, has been replaced by a tanker called MOST Yemen. The operation marks a major milestone in a plan that requires additional funding to transport the oil away and move the SOF Safer. A small amount of oil remains inside the Safer's hull, and a secure system for mooring the replacement tanker in deep water needs to be installed.
