"Airborne Superbugs: The Alarming Link Between Antibiotic Resistance and Pollution"

A new study from Zhejiang University and the University of Cambridge highlights the role of air pollution in the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The researchers found a strong association between particulate air pollution and reports of clinical antibiotic resistance, estimating that air pollution accounted for 12% of the increase in AMR from 2000-2018. The study suggests that curbing air pollution could help control the spread of AMR and potentially reduce premature deaths attributable to AMR by nearly one in four. However, more research is needed to establish the causal relationship between air pollution and AMR.
