As violence erupted in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, Sheraz Himad, a dentist, and her family fled to Egypt with only essentials, including gold jewelry hidden in a package of menstrual pads. They were part of a growing number of Sudanese civilians coordinating their escapes on social media and spending hundreds of dollars on bus seats to flee north. The family waited for days on both sides of the border, sleeping on the street as their passports were processed. They were exhausted but safe after a 15-hour journey and more than 20 checkpoints.
