"EU's Migration Obsession: A Threat to Human Rights"

The EU's obsession with curbing migration is undermining its commitment to human rights. Examples such as the deals struck with Libya, Turkey, and now Tunisia demonstrate a strategy that prioritizes migration control over human rights. This approach not only disregards the suffering and abuse faced by migrants and asylum seekers, particularly from Africa and the Middle East, but also erodes the EU's credibility as a principled human rights actor. By supporting repressive governments and emboldening oppressors, the EU betrays activists and human rights defenders and risks the rise of the far right, which threatens not only migrants' rights but also the rights of other marginalized groups and adherence to the rule of law within the EU. Ultimately, sacrificing the rights of migrants and refugees for short-term political gains may have disastrous consequences for the EU itself.
