U.N. Expresses Concern Over Migrant Arrests in Libya

The United Nations mission in Libya expressed concern over the arbitrary arrest of migrants and asylum seekers in the country, accompanied by a rise in hate speech and racist discourse. Libyan authorities have detained thousands of men, women, and children, including those who entered the country legally, and many are being held in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Despite insecurity in Libya, the country is home to about half a million migrants, some seeking to travel onwards to Europe, others to work in the oil-financed economy.
