Violent Assault on Prominent Russian Journalist and Lawyer in Chechnya

A prominent Russian investigative journalist, Yelena Milashina, and a human rights lawyer, Alexander Nemov, were brutally beaten by masked men in Chechnya as they were on their way to attend the high-profile trial of Zarema Musayeva, the mother of exiled opposition activists. Milashina, known for her reporting on human rights abuses in Chechnya, suffered broken fingers and bruises all over her body, while Nemov had injuries to his leg. The attack is believed to be an attempt to intimidate journalists, lawyers, and human rights activists in the region. Musayeva was later sentenced to 5½ years in prison.
